Hearty Buttermilk Pastry

  • 500 ml (300 g) Sasko Self Raising Flour
  • 5 ml salt
  • 100 g butter, cubed
  • 2 large eggs
  • 60 ml milk
  • 250 ml buttermilk

Chef's hint: It goes without saying that your filling be ready-to-eat, delicious and juicy before you spoon over the dough. For more delicious recipes, visit the pretty and very useful Sasko Flour website

Sift the Sasko Self Raising Flour and salt together. Rub in the butter using your fingertips to form fine crumbs. Whisk the eggs, milk and buttermilk together in a separate bowl. Mix the egg mixture into the flour to make a thick, sticky dough. Set aside while you make the pie filling.

Spoon the dough on top of your favourite pie filing (from apples to chicken). Flatten the dough for a neat finish. Bake for 40 50 minutes in the oven preheated to 180 C or until the pastry is puffed up and golden brown.
