Cheese Straws


  • 500 ml Sasko Cake Flour (250g)
  • 5 ml salt
  • 5 ml mustard powder
  • 150 g butter/margarine, cubed
  • 250 ml cheddar cheese, grated (100g)
  • 1 large egg
  • 60 ml cold water
  • 5 ml cayenne pepper


Preheat the oven to 200C and line a baking tray with baking paper.

Sift the flour, salt and mustard powder in a bowl. Rub in the cubed butter/margarine with your fingertips until it looks like breadcrumbs, add the cheese.

Whisk the egg and water together in a jug. Stir the egg mixture into the flour to form a soft dough. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface. Cut into strips and twist to form spiral shapes. Sprinkle half the cheese straws with cayenne pepper.

Bake for 10 - 15 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Makes 12 large straws.
