Hungry Tums Meat Pie


  • 250 g margarine
  • 4 X 250 ml Sasko Cake Flour (480g)
  • 15 ml baking powder
  • 250 ml boiling water
  • 5 ml salt
  • 500 g lean mince
  • 500 g (5 medium) potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 200 g (5-6 medium) carrots
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
  • 10 ml crushed garlic
  • 10 ml salt
  • 15 ml barbeque spice
  • 15 ml Worcestershire sauce
  • 30 ml tomato sauce
  • 10 ml dried herbs
  • egg for brushing

Chef's hint: Pre-cut the pie into portions and freeze for quick lunches or yummy snacks.


For the pastry:

Melt the margarine and water together. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. Combine the flour with water and mix to form a dough. Wrap the dough in cling film and rest for 15 minutes before rolling out.

For the filling:

Preheat the oven to 200C. Mix the rest of the ingredients together until well combined.

Roll out half of the pastry to line the bottom of the pie dish. Spread the filling over the pastry base. Roll out the rest of the pastry to cover the pie. Use the milk to seal the sides of the pie and press down with a fork. Brush evenly with egg on top.

Bake at 200C for 30 minutes. Reduce the heat to 180C and bake for a further 30 minutes.

Serves 10 - 12.
